Tiji Festival Lo Mathang Upper Mustang

The Tiji Festival is the greatest annual celebration in the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang in Upper Mustang, Nepal. It is a three-day festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil, as told in the legend of Dorje Jono (Dorje Shunu), a deity who battled against his demon father. The festival is celebrated in May or June, according to the Tibetan lunar calendar. On the first day, monks perform a series of rituals and prayers to prepare for the festival. On the second day, the monks perform the Mask Dance, which tells the story of Dorje Jono's battle with his father and evil forces. The dance is a complex and powerful performance, and it is one of the highlights of the festival. The third day of the Tiji Festival is the most interesting, as all the villagers of the Upper Mustang region assemble in one tiny square. The Tsowo, impersonating Dorje Sonam, destroys the demon using Buddhist tools and gunpowder fired from old muskets. The audience follows the Monk's retinue back into the walled city, now cleansed of all evil. The king and locals offer Khada to the performers in a thanksgiving way.
